Staying active is essential for healthy aging, especially for seniors striving to maintain strength, flexibility, and overall well-being. Physical activity not only enhances quality of life but also helps preserve independence as we age.

As we enter the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), it’s important to consider your coverage options for the year ahead. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer coverage for more than just prescriptions and primary care visits – they’ll even cover some gym membership and fitness expenses!

As a primary care provider for seniors and senior veterans, we believe that helping you make informed choices about your health insurance coverage can make a significant difference in your care and lifestyle. Here are a few things to know about how Medicare Advantage can support your fitness and physical wellness.

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is an alternative to Traditional Medicare. Private insurers contract with Medicare to provide all Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) services, often bundling in additional benefits like prescription drug coverage, vision, dental, and wellness perks.

A standout benefit of many Medicare Advantage plans is coverage for gym memberships or fitness programs like SilverSneakers, Renew Active, or Silver&Fit. These programs are tailored specifically to seniors and offer access to gyms, classes, and virtual workouts. Having these expenses covered by your plan means you can focus on staying active, social, and healthy without worrying about out-of-pocket costs.

How Does Medicare Advantage Cover Gym Memberships?

Fitness benefits remain a staple of many Medicare Advantage plans. In 2025, about 95% of Medicare Advantage plans offered some form of fitness or wellness perk. These benefits range from discounted gym memberships to full access to fitness centers and group exercise classes. In fact, some plans partner with nationwide fitness programs like SilverSneakers to provide members with free access to thousands of gyms, fitness classes, and wellness activities.

If your Medicare Advantage plan includes gym membership coverage, you may be eligible for:

  • Access to gyms nationwide: Whether you prefer a gym close to home or need access while traveling, many plans provide flexibility in gym locations.

  • Senior-friendly fitness classes: Choose from a variety of fitness classes tailored to your abilities and preferences, including yoga, strength training, and cardio.

  • At-home fitness options: Some plans also include online or virtual fitness programs, allowing you to stay active from the comfort of your home.

Why Physical Activity is Critical for Healthy Aging

Our primary care doctors at Flagship Health emphasize that exercise isn’t just about staying in shape. It’s about staying independent, reducing the risk of chronic conditions, and improving mental health. Regular physical activity has proven benefits such as:

By including fitness benefits, Medicare Advantage plans play an important role in promoting healthy aging and independence for seniors.

Finding a Medicare Advantage Plan That Covers Gym Memberships

Just because a plan advertises these benefits doesn’t guarantee full coverage at every gym you want to use. Benefits vary by network, location, and class offerings. As you explore your coverage options during AEP from October 15 through December 7 for the 2026 calendar year, here’s to look for when evaluating fitness benefits and Medicare Advantage plans:

  1. Review Plan Benefits
Medicare rules allow, but do not require, Part C plans to offer gym or wellness perks. Double check your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) to see whether gym or fitness benefits have been added, removed, or narrowed.

  2. Compare Plans for In-Person and Virtual Wellness Options
Similar to years past, many plans offer in-person access to gyms and fitness centers. Plans may also include access to online wellness classes, on-demand exercise videos, or hybrid home/gym access to accommodate mobility or distance barriers.

  3. Evaluate Location Restrictions and Discounts
Explore the details of each plan option – even if “gym membership coverage” is listed as a benefit, it may only apply to gyms in that plan’s network or offer a partial discount. Check that your preferred gym is included before selecting a plan.
